MythSpace: Black Mark | Comics Review

MythSpace: Black Mark | Comics Review

First off, allow me to extend my congratulations to writer Paolo Chikiamco and his team of awesome artists for sealing a publishing deal with Visprint Inc. That company has always been synonymous with high quality materials and I’m personally glad that they added MythSpace to their line. This means in a few months time, I will be able to walk into our local National Book Store here in Pangasinan and buy my copy of the comic there. There’s always a special feeling each time I get to do that.

Anyway, I want to write a bit about Black Mark for today.

This story is penned by Chikiamco and beautifully drawn by Paul Quiroga.

Correct me if I’m wrong (I haven’t read all titles yet so there’s a slight chance I may be mistaken) but I think this is the most action-packed MythSpace book. You’ll see explosions and action from the first pages to the last.

This, of course, is not to say that this is simply a Michael Bay-flavored comic. The tandem has managed to give us much more than that, I assure you.

Black Mark takes us to a rich world of interesting characters placed in a story that merges folklore, politics, and mecha. WOW! So insane and so good. I really enjoyed reading this.

Some quotable quotes from the comic:

“Appearances can be deceiving.”

“Not all Nuno cities are created equal.”

“I’ll need another drink if you expect me to believe you can raise the dead.”

“What we offer isn’t resurrection, but justice.”

“You don’t need names, or back stories, just know your roles.”

“Ok… So its not an earthquake.”

“I want to be the father every father wants to be.”

I swear Paolo is really good when it comes to delivering these one-liners.

Paul’s Manga-inspired artwork is also a nice treat. I find its grittiness to be very appealing. The tones also add a certain level of gorgeousness to the pages.

Simply put, I’m still completely amazed how Paolo has successfully picked top notch artists that bring the right vibe for his stories.

So dear readers, do take the time to visit the MythSpace table this Summer Komikon. I heard this is the last time they’ll be selling the indie edition of their comics.

Again, my warmest “congrats” to Team MythSpace for the well-deserved break. The thought that your compilation will soon be available nationwide excites me much!
